About Liminal

Liminal is the app the rest of the Curriculum Suite was built from, and the first one shipped. It runs 104 lessons across 23 courses, from the Presocratics through the medievals, the moderns and the analytic–continental split to the arguments still open now.

Each lesson treats philosophy as argument: what a position claims, the strongest objection to it, and who made it. Lessons quote primary sources directly, and where a famous quotation turns out to be misattributed, the lesson says so instead of repeating it.

What you get

104 lessons, four years

Twenty-three courses in the order a philosophy degree teaches them: the Presocratics, Plato and Aristotle, the medievals, the moderns, the analytic–continental split, and the arguments still open now.

Positions and objections

Every lesson states what a position claims, the strongest objection to it, and who made it, with primary-source excerpts quoted directly.

Misattributions called out

Where a famous quotation turns out to be misattributed or invented, the lesson says so instead of repeating it.

On-device narration

The iOS speech synthesizer reads lessons aloud on the device, so no audio leaves the phone.

Glossary, quizzes and thought experiments

82 glossary terms linked to the lessons that use them, a quiz per course, and 16 classic thought experiments worked through step by step.

48 philosopher profiles

Who they were, what they argued, and which lessons carry their ideas forward.

Spaced review

Terms you forget come back for review the next day, and the gaps between reviews grow as you keep recalling them.

Daily widgets

Three Home Screen widgets show a quote, a term and a philosopher, each changing daily.

Common questions

How much is free?

The first ten lessons. One purchase of $9.99 unlocks the remaining 94 and everything else, permanently. An App Store purchase also covers the people in your Family Sharing group. Google Play has no family sharing for a one-time in-app purchase, so a Play purchase unlocks the course for the account that bought it.

Does it need an internet connection?

The course content works offline: every lesson, profile, glossary entry, quiz and thought experiment is bundled in the download. On iPhone and iPad, App Store product loading, buying or restoring the one-time unlock, and the optional rating prompt use Apple's services and need a connection. The Android build holds no internet permission, so the Google Play Store app on your phone carries the purchase, the restore and the rating prompt.

Is this accredited? Do I get credit?

No. It is a self-study course written to the level of a university survey sequence. It carries no accreditation and grants no credit.

Are the quotations real?

Primary sources are quoted directly and attributed to the work they come from. Where a familiar quotation is misattributed or has no source, the lesson says so rather than repeating it.

How do I move my progress to a new phone?

Progress, bookmarks and review history are stored on-device. On iPhone and iPad, an encrypted device or iCloud backup may include them according to your Apple backup settings. On Android, the app's data can reach a new device through Android's cloud backup and device-to-device transfer, according to your Google backup settings. There is no account-based sync, so confirm the backup restored before erasing the old phone. If the new phone still shows the paywall, tap Restore Purchases in the app's settings: on iPhone and iPad that asks the App Store to re-check the unlock, and on Android it asks Google Play.
