About Welding Inspector
Certification prep for the AWS Certified Welding Inspector examination, covering all three parts (Fundamentals, Practical and Code Application) across 18 subject areas, 54 lessons and 492 original questions. Part A is free in full, including its full-length timed form. Part C is practised against GSWS-1, an original 319-clause welding specification written for this app: fictional by design, because the published codes are copyrighted and because reading an unfamiliar specification is the skill that part tests. Fifty-seven field calculators stay free forever. Everything works offline, with no account. Gauge is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the American Welding Society.
What you get
Part A, free in full
Every Part A lesson, its whole 300-question bank and the full-length 150-question timed form, free, with no account and no network. Part A is the longest sitting and the one candidates lose most often.
Scored the way the real exam is
The CWI has three separately scored parts, and you need 72% on each part and a 72% composite. A strong Part A cannot make up for a weak Part C, so every practice form scores all three parts the way the real exam does.
An original code to navigate
Part C is open book, and the skill is finding the governing clause fast. This app ships GSWS-1, an original 319-clause specification with acceptance tables, cross-references and the exceptions that catch people who stop reading too early. It is fictional on purpose: the published codes are copyrighted, and finding your way around an unfamiliar document is the skill that transfers.
Every Part C question quotes its clause
The governing text is printed in the question, so an open-book item is answerable on a phone with nothing else open.
Worked solutions that carry the units
Heat input, carbon equivalent, fillet leg and throat, geometric unsharpness and ultrasonic skip distance show every step with the units carried through.
Works with no signal
Everything is on the device, so the app works in a steel fab shop or site trailer with no reception.
- Works offlineCore content and features remain available without a signal after any required download or purchase.
- No online accountNo sign-up, login, cloud account or account-based sync.
- One-time unlockA single non-consumable purchase, not a recurring subscription.
Common questions
What is free, and what does the unlock buy?
The calculators, the formula reference and the unit tools are free permanently. They are not a trial and they do not expire. The one-time unlock opens the full question bank, the worked solutions, the timed practice forms and the review tools.
Is it a subscription?
No. A single non-consumable in-app purchase, with nothing to cancel. Whatever you have already earned or completed stays readable regardless of purchase state.
Will this work at the plant, with no signal?
Yes. All content and every calculator are on the device. A connection is only needed to load, buy or restore the unlock, through the App Store on iPhone and iPad or Google Play on Android.
Does the app match my state's exam?
Exam format, grade designations and passing scores are set by the certifying authority in your jurisdiction and vary between them. Each app states the exam and the area weighting it is built around; confirm current requirements with your own certifying authority before you rely on it.
Can I use the calculators for real work?
They are a study and reference aid. Verify any result against your permit, your facility's standard operating procedures, and the currently adopted regulations before you act on it.
I found a wrong answer. What happens?
Email support with the question and what you think is wrong. The developer checks every report and corrects confirmed errors in an update. An automated test suite covers every formula and recomputes each worked solution in code.
